Nagato is the first battleship to carry 410 mm guns. The caliber is sufficient to overmatch every ship in its MMweight. Nagato’s penetration is also the highest in its MMweight. This gives Nagato a significant firepower advantage, because if the enemy is careless Nagato can punish it with impunity. Nagato’s accuracy is good and at long range it’s pretty consistent. Nagato has standard shell velocity, but due to low air drag it retains its speed and performance at long range. Nagato can citadel battleships at any angle, sometimes even at maximum range.

While Nagato’s guns are epic, it falls in other aspects. Nagato has bad armor. The bow and stern can be overmatched by 380 mm guns. Even when angled, Nagato can be easily penetrated. Only the deck armor is good, which means it’s more comfortable fighting at long range.

Nagato has slow speed, which makes maneuvering and positioning very tricky. This is further complicated by terrible surface detectability. Nagato is often the first ship to be detected. Once detected, it is a primary target for everyone to shoot. An inexperienced Nagato player will either get sunk quickly or stuck in an uncomfortable position.

Playstyle

Nagato’s best position is at the back, sniping in open water. Often you don’t have a choice anyway because you’re already getting spotted. Speed juke is extremely important for Nagato players. You can try this simple speed juke tactic: stay at long range (>14 km), sail at 1/4 speed when the enemy isn’t shooting, accelerate to full speed when the enemy shoots at you, reverse if the enemy shoots in front of your ship. Equip artillery warning crew skill for more situational awareness.

Since Nagato has good guns, it can fight at the flanks or at a central position. The most comfortable position depends on your own skill and playstyle. Always angle and try to fire all guns. Use AP ammunition at all times. The guns have sufficient performance to fight back enemies that are attacking you. If the enemy’s force in your flank is superior, start kiting. Don’t push unless it’s absolutely unnecessary. If you need to push, angle your ship instead of bowtank.

Is it worth to buy?

Nagato has menacing guns but low survivability. It requires more skill to use and good teammates to tank for it. If Nagato is undisturbed, it can be very powerful. Buy it if you like sniping.

Nagato is a tech tree ship, which means you just have to grind it. No need to spend money.
