Renown is from the same class as Repulse, but underwent several upgrades. Renown only has six guns (3×2 380 mm). However, Renown has great accuracy that rivals high tier battleships. The AP has sufficient caliber to overmatch most ships in its MMweight (except Gneisenau, York, and Wichita). Against ships that the AP can’t penetrate, use HE. Renown’s HE is pretty strong because it has high penetration and fire chance. Combined with fast reload, Renown’s AP and HE can outperform many battleships in its tier despite having less guns. The shell velocity is not bad either so Renown has no problem fighting at long range. The limiting factor for sniping is usually its short range.

Renown can be overmatched from the bow and stern by 380 mm guns. The side armor is thin, except around the cheek (the side armor around front turrets). This means with steep angling Renown can bounce a lot of shells, even 406 mm caliber.

Renown has four torpedoes per side. Those torpedoes have short range and bad firing angle but big damage. Renown is one of the few tier 7 battleships that can win a close range combat against higher tier battleships easily if the player angles the ship properly. Unfortunately, Renown’s torpedo tubes are fragile so the player must invest in “tube enhance” crew skill.

Renown’s engine and rudder performance is great. It also has engine overload consumable which makes it the second fastest battleship in its tier (the fastest battleship is Hood). Renown’s surface detectability is good, so it can ambush enemies and turn back to stealth easily. Renown can run around the map and freely control how it wants to engage the enemy.

Playstyle

At the start of the match, sail to the far side of a flank, ahead of your teammates. Activate engine overload consumable if needed. Your speed will help you reach a good position before your teammates. Before you shoot, angle your ship first. Do not show broadside. This is because Renown’s side armor is weak. Use AP as your default ammunition. Use HE only against targets that AP fail to penetrate (such as bowtanking Gneisenau, York, and Wichita).

Use speed juke to dodge incoming shells. You can try this simple tactic: stay at medium range, sail at 1/4 speed when the enemy isn’t shooting, accelerate to full speed when the enemy shoots at you, reverse if the enemy shoots in front of your ship. Use engine overload if needed.

At the flank, Renown can create crossfire with the slower teammates at the center. Renown can be used to push, but you must do it very carefully because it can’t sustain focused fire from multiple enemies. Remember to always angle your ship. Don’t bowtank. Firing full salvo exposes your citadel too much, so in close combat it’s often safer to not use the back guns. If your range to the enemy is less than 5 km, launch your torpedoes. Your torpedoes might not be able to one shot a full HP battleship, so you should still use your guns to kill the enemy.

If the situation turns bad and you’re still quite far from the enemy, activate the engine overload consumable then turn back. You don’t need to run away. Kite away and use speed juke as described above.

In a CV battle, Renown’s AA is very valuable to protect other teammates. Sail together with your allies. Since Renown has no problem fighting at long range, it’s actually a good pick in CV battles.

Is it worth to buy?

Renown is one of the strongest battleships in its tier and can still be competitive against higher tier.

Renown is a prism ship. If you want to get it, you must spend money. It’s quite cheap and worth to buy if you have money. However, keep in mind that this is not a pay-to-win game. Your skill matters more than the ship. If you use it poorly, Renown will sink very quickly.
