When first released, Surrey was a great cruiser. However, the armor has been nerfed, now it takes random citadels from everywhere. Still, it’s a heavy cruiser with decent guns, torpedoes, and smokescreen. It needs some practice before someone can play it well.

Playstyle

Surrey’s guns has slow shell velocity, but the air drag is much lower than US cruisers. Surrey has great HE penetration and fast reload for a heavy cruiser. Surrey is also the only British heavy cruiser that has good AP, mainly because it has enough caliber to overmatch most cruisers in MMweight 7.0 and below. Surrey’s AP can citadel some light cruisers from the front. This makes Surrey a decent cruiser hunter.

Surrey is tricky to use because it has terrible accuracy. Terrible accuracy means it prefers fighting at close range, but it has practically no armor to back it up. The armor can only protect it from light cruiser-caliber shells. Any battleship can destroy it from any angle. It does have good maneuverability, but because of its big size, hitting it is easy. There’s really no good range for Surrey to deal damage in a battle with battleships around. In order to increase its survivability, lobbing shells from behind island is recommended. Use smokescreen if needed. Kiting and flanking are also good, but you must exert extra caution to angling and speed juking. You can play more aggressively if there are no enemy battleships nearby.

Surrey has torpedoes, but don’t blindly rush the enemies unless your enemy is a cruiser without torpedo. The torpedo angle is great, but it only has 4 torpedoes each side with 8 km range. Those torpedoes are generally used as an alternative method of attacking when kiting or ambushing.

Just like other British heavy cruisers, Surrey’s smokescreen only has 4 puffs. If you’re sailing at full speed and you activate the smokescreen consumable, you must hit reverse immediately. If you don’t do that, Surrey will be out of the smokescreen when the consumable deactivates. If you just want to use smokescreen as a cover before turning broadside or running away, you don’t need to slow down.

Surrey has bad concealment. It’s not good for capturing bases, spotting enemies, or hunting DDs Surrey’s AA is not good, but with smokescreen it can protect itself from planes.

Is it worth to buy?

Surrey is a decent tech tree ship. The top tier ship is Duke of Edinburgh, a great cruiser. You should grind it if you are familiar with using smokescreen and like burning enemies.
